Externalization of Mental Illness & Trauma
My work is both cathartic and socially motivated. The disgraceful stigma of mental illness labels a person and puts them in a stereotyped group. I'm hoping to break the negative attitudes towards common mental conditions like depression, anxiety and/or addictive behaviors. These disorders have affected my mood, thinking, behavior, and most obviously my art. Conjuring my feelings into a tangible form helps me to identify and manage them more clearly.

Garbage Walks
Art as social action - inspired by the moment to address my own mental and physical health, while simultaneously caring for our planet and it's inhabitants.
Told to walk by my doctor to fight depression, I found that seeing all the garbage on my hikes was only adding to my depression. The solution was obvious and empowering.
Most of us have picked up garbage that wasn't ours, but combining the act of walking for physical and mental well-being with taking some responsibility for the welfare of our planet, and the animals that live here, makes it extraordinary. The litter used to make me feel sad and resentful, but when on a "Garbage Walk" I feel empowered and even a bit special.
